WHERE DO I GET MY IDEAS?
They may not always come easily, but they will come to you, and there
are methods which can help you make the ideas come easier. It seems
to be a rule of human nature, particularly with the human mind, that
if we ask it a question we may not immediately get an answer, but it
is also the rule that the answer will eventually come to us. It may
not come right away. It may come a few minutes later, a few hours
later, or maybe even a few weeks later, but it will come.
Sometimes it isn't necessary to ask ourself a question as to something
we want to write down. Maybe you get an idea from a friend or
something you experience in the work world or wherever. Or maybe
creative thoughts come to you quite spontaneously and easily whenever
you simply put your mind to it. If this is true I wish more of us
were like you.
If the case is that you do not readily have useful ideas which come to
mind, don't be too discouraged, because the answers will come if you
ask yourself the question. After you ask yourself a question
conceding a good topic to write about, or a good story to start upon,
it might be a good idea to keep a pad and pencil handy and write it
down before getting distracted by something else. You might be
surprised when the answer suddenly pops into your mind.
It might also be a good idea to keep that pad and pencil near your bed
at night. Many people have an idea pop into their mind when first
waking in the morning, or sometimes in the middle of the night.
Personally, I prefer to use one of those hand-held dictating machines
since I have a difficult time writing in the dark, and by the time I
get to the light switch the idea may be gone.
What Is Writer's Block?
In the event you haven't heard of writer's block, it's simply where a
writer feels caught at an impasse, where he or she cannot come up with
ideas to put down. They get stuck and can't continue.
How Can I Break Through Writer's Block?
This is very closely related to the topic above about "where do we get
our ideas," or "how to we be creative when it just isn't happening."
One method is to simply get away from it for a time. Take a break for
even just a few minutes, go for a walk, put your attention on other
things for a while.
When you get back to your story you should feel a little different,
maybe even a little refreshed and ready to take a new shot at it.
Hanging in there forever can be a real grind, especially when it's
just not happening. This is a very simple method, and it works very
well. But as with "coming up with ideas" as mentioned above, don't
expect to perform miracles immediately. It possibly may require a
break of several hours, or several days, or even longer to remedy the
problem.
The mechanics of it seem to be that we get so close to it that we get
temporarily blocked. We sometimes just need to withdraw from it for a
time, go back to it after a little recreation of some sort. Did you
notice that word, recreation? Think about it for a moment. Let's put
it more in the light of re-creation. When we withdraw and take a
break, then go back to it, we are engaging in just a little bit of re-
creation, aren't we? You can use this very simple technique to re-
create your writing project every time you feel like your are getting
writer's block.
There are a number of other beneficial procedures as well in varying
degrees of usefulness which can be applied to remedy writer's block.
In another book entitled "Fine-Tuning Your Life," there are quite a
number of procedures which are helpful in remedying writer's block, in
addition to a list of other items with which you might want help.
If you would like a copy of Fine-Tuning Your Life, see the Table Of
Contents and select "To Place An Order." The introduction at the
beginning of this book, as well as some of the later illustrations
tell more about Fine-Tuning Your Life.
